Her jaundiced eyes show that Nupur, 20, has contracted hepatitis B – but she must continue her work at a brothel in Bangladesh. With more than half its population living below the poverty line, Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Poverty, low social status and lack of opportunities for education and employment have forced many women into the sex trade. Nupur has been working at the brothel for three years.
